4 Reasons Why Irish People Should Eat Potatoes

If you will study modern Irish history, you will learn that Irish farmers primarily eat potatoes with their skin mixed with buttermilk, that is why they have some protein and fats. They might had occasionally had tiny bits of meat, but I must say that this is very uncommon.

In Ireland, the main source of nutrients were what they can raise and grow in the land. It is easy to say that you can only eat what you can grow.

The question is why potatoes? They are tasteless and dull, right?

1. Potatoes are a Nourishing Powerhouse.

Potatoes are a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of potassium, copper, vitamin C, manganese, phosphorus, niacin, dietary fiber and pantothenic acid but as mentioned in most households Irish people seem to use butters like Flora to mix with their spuds which are not beneficial especially if your goal is weight loss.

2. Potatoes are Easy to Grow.

One of the easiest root crops to grow is potatoes. Plus, they’re fun to grow and a small area can provide a nice yield of this tasty vegetable. Early spring is the best time to plant them and around areas like Dundalk you will see farmers grow them.

3. Potatoes Can Grow in Any Season.

Since Ireland has a poor weather, they need something that they can grow anytime of the year. The fast and easy way to get your family fed is to plant potato early in the growing season and dig, wash and eat right away before the rest of the crop comes. The potatoes that were left will be stored for the winter.

4. Potatoes are easy to Cook.

The good thing about potato is practically anybody can cook it. Little Irish residences weren’t intended for strenuous cooking sessions with heaps of fixings. During the famine they actually ate it raw or half cook.
